Happy New Year, everyone!
This is my first blog of the year, and I’ve been thinking about changing my posting schedule to once a week, every Wednesday. This year, I plan to focus more on my podcast, which I’ve been doing for three months now. Although I only recently surpassed 80 followers, starting the podcast was the best decision I made last year. It gave me a way to express myself, and I’ve met many friends who share the same interests through this journey.
Today, I had a conversation with the hosts of another podcast, one that has almost 800 followers—10 times more than mine. They invited me to do an episode together, and we talked a lot. They shared valuable advice with me, and I realised a few things. With the rise of stand-up comedy shows in China, many comedians have started their own podcasts. Platforms like Xiaoyuzhou and Lizhi are becoming increasingly popular, and this trend will likely continue. Most listeners enjoy podcasts that relate to their lives, but my podcast has struggled in this area—it’s a bit too niche.
So far, I’ve experimented with different topics, such as interviewing entrepreneurs, discussing buying houses in the UK, the lay-off boom, and more. While none of these topics became hits, I’ve found happiness and a deeper connection with the world through podcasting. The hosts I spoke with today gave me a new perspective. They suggested that instead of focusing on giving advice, I could try to provide companionship to my listeners by sharing stories about things happening around me. They also mentioned that most podcast users are based in China, so topics that pique curiosity—even if they happen overseas—could attract more attention. Another realisation I had is that the name of my podcast, London Night, might be too niche. People who don’t live in the UK might not find it appealing.
On the last day of last year, I found another host in the UK who is willing to collaborate with me on my podcast. It feels like there’s always something pushing me forward, which I’m incredibly grateful for.
Yesterday, I went to see a movie with some friends. One of them is returning to China today, and another friend I visited earlier today will be leaving London next week and doesn’t plan to come back. I feel sad to lose two friends here, but I’m also happy for them as they start new chapters in their lives. As for me, I’m excited about this year. Although I haven’t fully settled down in this country and there are many uncertainties, I know I have friends here who I can spend time with. I look forward to new experiences, and I believe the things I tried last year may guide me toward the direction I’ve always hoped for.
Cheers to a new chapter and all the best for the year ahead! 🎉
